Deep Dive on IBM Corporate Service Corps

How I Joined IBM’s Corporate Service Corps (CSC)

I first heard about the IBM Corporate Service Corps while I was in the IBM Summit Sales Program back in 2012. Someone came to one of our training sessions to talk about it, and I instantly thought, “What an amazing opportunity.” But since I was still new to IBM at the time, I didn’t yet meet the eligibility requirements. Even so, the idea stuck with me, and five years later, in 2017, I finally applied.

What is the IBM Corporate Service Corps?

The Corporate Service Corps (CSC) program celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Launched in 2008, it’s a global leadership development initiative that also serves communities through pro bono consulting. Each year, IBM selects about 500 employees to participate in a one-month international assignment. Teams of 8 to 15 people—representing various countries and professional backgrounds—collaborate with local organizations to tackle real-world challenges.

The CSC program brings a threefold benefit:

  1. Communities receive solutions to their challenges.

  2. IBMers gain hands-on leadership development.

  3. IBM builds future global leaders and explores emerging markets.

All past and current projects are showcased on the IBM CSC Projects website. One of my personal favorites is the Ghana 12 Team’s collaboration with TECHAiDE and the Peace Corps to support girls’ education and development.

The Application Journey

In the summer of 2017, I received an email reminding me about the CSC application deadline. Two thoughts came to mind:

  1. Could I finish the application in time? The deadline was fast approaching.

  2. Should I wait until 2018? I had more volunteer work planned for later in the year that would strengthen my application.

That same day, I had lunch with my friend and coworker Brian, a CSC alum (Kenya Team 9). Our conversation helped me put aside my doubts. Thanks to his encouragement, I submitted my application—and now, here I am sharing my journey to Australia.

The application process takes a few months. To qualify, you must have worked at IBM for at least two years, be fluent in English, and show a strong commitment to community service. You also need positive manager endorsements and excellent year-end reviews. The application includes essay responses and personal reflections.

In mine, I focused on my volunteer efforts in STEM, where I involved IBM in outreach activities, as well as IBM-sponsored events like the US Open and Tribeca Film Festival. I also shared my experience co-founding the “Pillars for Carolina” Extended Orientation Program at the University of South Carolina, which eventually became an official university initiative. I explained how CSC would support both my personal growth and professional development while allowing me to give back in meaningful ways.

When you apply, you’re considered for assignments over the next two years. I applied in 2017 for placements during 2018–2019. Selection is competitive, so I was thrilled to be accepted and given the chance to contribute in a new and impactful way.

Off to Australia!

In June, I got the exciting news—I had been chosen for the first CSC team to go to Australia! It was late at night when I read the email, but the joy was instant—I was absolutely thrilled. The program moves quickly, so I had to respond right away. If you don’t confirm, you’re placed back in the waiting pool and someone else is selected.

I immediately contacted my manager and team leads, and they were all incredibly supportive. I also received encouragement from Brad, another CSC alum (Kazakhstan Team 2). While I’m on assignment in Brisbane, my regular IBM responsibilities will be on hold, fully supported by my colleagues.

All CSC teams go through training before heading to their host countries, and this summer, I’ve been busy preparing with my amazing teammates. Getting to know them over the past few months has been a great experience, and I’m so looking forward to meeting them in person soon!
